How To Track Your Assets Even Better
Over the last decade, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has become more popular and more advanced to help companies track and manage their fixed assets UK. However, the technology has still not reached it's optimum usage. Presently the technology is overly expensive and is only really used at the manufacturer stage or on more expensive products. The most ideal use of RFID technology would be to track items off shop shelves.
RFID is a form of tracking, very similar to barcodes. A barcode is a simple visible data storing tag that is read by a scanner device. An RFID tag is a chip that can be accessed remotely using an RFID reader, it stores data about the item it's attached to and then sends it to the reader. Radio waves are used by the reader to retrieve information off the chip.
However, asset tracking UK hasn't managed to get to that level, however a significant amount of companies within the United States are already taking advantage of the RFID tagging. A few of the services that use the RFID tagging is public transport payment methods, libraries, museums and new passports. The majority of industries using RFID are run by the government.
Although the majority of companies know why RFID is so important, but they haven't got the money to buy into it. In the last few years, tracking your assets has become a vital part of business. However, all companies knwo that auditing their assets slows down business. Some companies find that several months after auditing, they have missed a large amount of their assets.
Using RFID tags on a large number of your assets, you are able to track hundreds of your items instantly from a location within the tags range. This makes the task of managing all your assets alot easier.
Just one company that is using RFID tech is Unilever. They have added the RFID tags to over 20,000 assets across their production lines. The tagging system allows Unilever to audit their items from a remote location, whereas if they had to do this manually, it would result in shutting down the production line.
This example shows how RFID tracking saves your business money and time. There is a huge amount of examples out there. Another example would be in the emergancy services, allowing them to track vital pieces of equipment, saving time. It also ensures that when the vehicle goes to the incident, it's got the correct tools required.
Unfortunately, RFID tracking comes at a hige price. With the better RFID tags costing between $40 and $60, it's not cheap to efficiently track your assets. Hopefully costs will fall as the technology becomes cheaper to develop. As soon as more companies use this form of tracking, fixed asset register UK programs will become more widely used.
