The Top Recordings Of Frank Sinatra Is On Vinyl
Frank Sinatra fans are usually discerning about hearing the singer’s recordings the way fans have since World War II. For its intense tone and realistic sound reproduction, Frank Sinatra vinyl is the serious listener’s choice. Collectors of classic vinyl recordings know that the charm of Sinatra’s baritone comes through clearly on his vinyl LPs. Not only do they provide high-quality sound, Sinatra LPs offer the large, colorful artwork that was featured on the original recordings. Choosing the top Sinatra sides among the numerous discs that are available is a daunting task. With dozens of albums and a song list topping 1,100 entries, Sinatra was an active recording artist.
Sinatra’s record output can be best characterized by studying the several periods that define it. We can get an overview of his productivity by looking at sides he recorded on Columbia, Capitol and Reprise. Vinyl discs of his tunes from all three eras are on the market. The top place to start your journey is with Sinatra’s Capitol sessions, which many regard as his best. From ’53 to ’60 he produced some of his most durable hits on Capitol, including "Learnin' the Blues," "Witchcraft" and "All the Way”. A golden era for the Chairman, from ’53 to ’60 he not only laid down top-shelf tunes in the studio, he also won the Academy Award for his performance in “From Here to Eternity”. “A Swingin’ Affair,” “Close to You & More” and “Come Fly With Me” are Capitol albums that will give a good snapshot of Sinatra music from this era.
With dawn of the 1960s, Sinatra opened his own company, Reprise Records, and recorded songs he hand picked. Sinatra’s LPs on Capitol were never quite equaled by the Chairman’s releases on Reprise. In 1963, Warner Brothers purchased Reprise from Sinatra, although the crooner continued to exercise creative control at the label. Sinatra and his pals, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., who called themselves “the Rat Pack,” were kings of the Las Vegas Strip. In this era, the Rat Pack starred in the heist film, “Oceans 11”. You’ll need to seek out albums from this period such as “I Remember Tommy,” and “Sinatra and Strings”.
Recordings from the start of the Sinatra catalog include his work with Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra and Dorsey recorded for a couple of years, and then Frank signed with Columbia. “The Voice of Frank Sinatra” and “Songs by Sinatra” were bona fide hits then. You can secure a good overview of this time frame’s music on "The Columbia Years 1943-1952: The Complete Recordings".
If you find the majority of these classic vinyl recordings you’ll be well on your way toward compiling a good cross-section of Sinatra’s finest work. Let the tunes entertain you, pour yourself a martini, and absorb the greatness that is Sinatra.
