Buying A Small Dog - 3 To Consider
Unless you have a particular type of dog in mind, it isn't easy deciding which breed to get. You should first think about the size of the dog you want. Do you have the space for a large dog? Or do you only have a courtyard? Small dogs can provide great companionship. And there is a lot of variation in the temperament and look of a small dog. You probably know about toy dogs, however there are others that are similar to their larger canine siblings.
I'll run through three breeds in this article - whippets, welsh terriers, and brussels griffons.
Brussels Griffon Breed
Rumors have it that the large, human-like eyes of the brussels griffon were part of what led George Lucas, of Star Wars fame, to create the Ewoks. Looking at these cute dogs, you can see the resemblance.
Brussels griffons are particularly sensitive and devoted dogs who will be more closely bonded with one person than others. They should be socialized when they are very young. Brussels griffon are not really well suited as a family pet because of their sensitivity and one-person nature.
One of the great things about the brussels griffon is that they are fine with cats, as well as other dogs, although care should be taken when they are with dogs a lot bigger than them.
Welsh Terrier Information
Welsh terriers have been described as calm for a terrier, but probably not as calm as other dogs. They are sturdy looking dogs with quite a big personality, especially the boys. Welsh terriers are affectionate, joyous, fearless, outgoing, and inquisitive.
Many years ago, Welsh terriers were used to keep the rat and vermin population down, consequently welsh terriers love to chase things - including cats. So,, if you already have a cat, or are planning on getting one, this probably isn't the best pet for your family.
Excellent with children, welsh terriers really need a 'dog proof' yard as they like nothing better than to dig, and could thus escape. When walking a welshie, it's important he stays on the leash, as his road sense when distracted by fun is not very good.
Welsh terriers require quite a bit of time from their owners. They need regular grooming, and get bored when left alone for many hours in a day. They are better suited to someone with a part time job instead of a full time job. When they're bored, they can cause destruction around the house.
The Whippet Dog Breed
Whippets are a type of sighthound dog, which are known as that because they hunt by using their keen eyesight and great speed, instead of using scents like scent hounds. whippets are small, elegant dogs, with heights that span 17.5 to 20 inches. And the whippet dog breed look just like miniature greyhounds!
In temperament, whippets are like toy dogs, in that they are happy to sleep on your lap. These are very loyal dogs, bonding with their owner strongly, though still good natured around strangers and children. The whippet dog breed are very gentle, and as such they have been used in aged care facilities.
These dogs need to be kept inside. With such thin coats, they will be too cold outside, and they don't like to be away from their owners for such a long period of time. If you're prepared to exercise them regularly, they are great for apartment living.
