Hbo Goes For The Satellite Tv Gold With Latest Original Film “You Don’T Know Jack”

HBO is no stranger to receiving serious acclaim for its edgy filmmaking choices, and its latest potential hit, scheduled to be released in 2010, has all of the ingredients for serious success: big-name actors, and excellent director and writer team, and some rather controversial and rich subject material. While it still remains to be seen just how big of a hit this film will be, much of the buzz is pointing towards the first really huge triumph for HBO in film in quite some time.

Al Pacino hasn’t done much for the mega-successful premium channel since his role in “Angels in America” the mini-series, but his return to satellite tv is quite possibly going to be one of his most acclaimed performances yet. Completely unrecognizable, Pacino takes on the challenging role of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the physician who spent the better part of the last two decades in jail for his role in facilitating a number of suicides by terminally ill patients who were in immense pain and suffering. While the doctor is now out of jail and planning a run for political office, Pacino is playing him before he ended up in the slammer, as a doctor who simply wanted to comply with his patient’s wishes for a painless end-of-life experience, an alternative to years and years of suffering at the hands of unbeatable illness.

Other big-name actors are also on board for the project, though HBO is trying to remain tightlipped, releasing just a couple of previews and hoping for the best without spending too much time talking the film up. While the channel has definitely been on top of its game as far as mini-series and comedy and drama goes, it hasn’t brought a seriously compelling film to satellite tv in quite some time, so it’s important that this goes off without a hitch. Though it enjoyed success with its fictionalized account of the classic documentary “Grey Gardens,” it has not done so well when straying from nonfictional material, so “You Don’t Know Jack” seems as though it is primed and ready to be another huge success for the channel.

Other big names on board the project include Barry Levinson, who was responsible for directing such hugely successful films as “Wag the Dog,” Rain Man,” and “Good Morning, Vietnam,” as well as writer Adam Mazer, responsible for the psychological thriller, “Breach,” which starred Ryan Phillipe and Gary Cooper and focused on espionage within high-level government agencies. The source material for the script was the extensive and compelling book “Between the Dying and the Dead,” written about Kevorkian.

Satellite TV viewers will have their chance to see “You Don’t Know Jack” sometime in 2010, and chances are that the channel with re-air the film a great deal, considering the caliber of talent involved. Susan Sarandon, always a fabulous performer, is also acting in the film, as is John Goodman. No matter when this film finally airs, chances are it’s going to be one of the hottest things to hit HBO in quite some time.
