The Young, the Mature and the Old: What Happened to and What Awaits Glamour Images
As a prominent artistic school, Glamorous Photography has been altered dramatically through the past years; knowledge of what happened to it earlier can give us the clue of what awaits glamour images in the future. Beauty photography has seen a number of downfalls and artistic revolutions before it achieved its modern condition.
Let us have a short walk through the past years of Glamour Photographs and then venture forth to predict some of their future.
Early Years. It is a very controversial issue of where the history of glamour photography really begins. Some seek the roots in Paris of 1930's, where so-called "french postcards" were sold in abundance - others deem Victorian photography and its gurus to be responsible. A few people consider that beauty photography can be traced as far back as Baroque and Renaissance art. To put it simply, the question of origin of glamour pictures is far from being answered. I prefer to consider that classic and contemporary fine arts contributed in equal measures to create this unique genre and it is the melting pot of 1920s culture that we owe its birth. It is from the first half of 20th century that we can finally gasp distinguishable and credible information about beauty photography.
Brilliant 50s and Beyond. After World War II, glamour pictures reached the apex of their glory, closely followed by controversy and outrage. Famous Betty Grable was the queen of hearts before and after the war; Marilyn Monroe brought even more recognition to glamour pictures by her famous appearance on Playboy's cover in 1953. There were also Pamela Green and others helping to bring this young art to its feet and conquer the world-wide audience.
Modern Times Going Digital. Color wasn't the only achievement that glamour pictures acquired - they turned into something more creative and provocative. New names started conquering the stage, glamour magazines and beauty photography admirers - those were Dita von Teese, Heidie Van Horne, Lucy Pinder, Bernie Dexter and many others. Additionally, digital format started dominating in photographic arts. The tidal wave of progress improved glamour images technical quality and drastically simplified the very process of photo production. Any amateur with a DSLR became a potential glamour photographer. In a combination with Web technologies, this was like a clamor of billions and billions of both talented people and senseless dabblers.
Are you Afraid of 3D? At long last, 3D art hits the stage, offering computer graphics as an arguable alternative to photography. Though nobody doubts it is art, 3D appears to rival not only the photography techniques but artists and models themselves. However, it is my firm belief that no computer-rendered beauty can ever substitute for genuine model, real lighting and sincere artistry. In this fight of old and new I remain with the side of inspiration, live relationship and hard studio work.
I feel optimistic about the future oils, film and digital have found their admirers and seem immortal. 3D art undoubtedly deserves for its own niche and admirers. Technology rarely matters - inspiration and devotion are the most important pillars of any art. No real photographer ever forgets this - and I'm sure that neither will you.
