Hallow's Eve Proclaimed The End Of Pontiac
This past year, it had been announced that Pontiac was being shut down as a brand. As of Halloween, it has stopped to exist entirely. GM had to get rid of the underperforming brand names it kept, and Pontiac regrettably went the way of the Dodo. General Motors also laid Saturn, Hummer, Opel, and other brands to rest along with it. It was one of the oldest and best known brands for some time. The thing Pontiac was known for had been offering race quality speed at really competing prices.
No more Pontiac
Pontiac was just one of the brands that General Motors got rid of during its bankruptcy. The brand had been suffering as of 2008, and GM decided to allow Pontiac to pass away. USA Today reports that Pontiac isn’t a corporate entity anymore, as of Sun. Models of Chevrolet and Buick seemed to be too much of Pontiac. Numerous were upset that General Motors had done this with the brand. There were a lot of Pontiac muscle cars from the 1950s to the 1980s. Pontiac was known for this horsepower.
The history
Working class families were targeted with the Pontiac within the first place. They were launched in 1926. General Motors had to rethink the car as the sales in the 1950s were really decreasing. Pontiac cars became racing and performance driven creatures, and by 1965, GM had introduced the Pontiac GTO, one of the most legendary cars of all time, and also the near epitome of Detroit muscle cars. The GTO, or "Gran Turismo Omolagato," had been inspired by Italian sport tour cars. A small team, headed by John DeLorean, created the car, built it on the Tempest frame and put a powerful 389-cubic-inch engine under the hood. In 1968, 17 percent of GM sales were these cars proving its popularity. Other successes, such as the powerful Pontiac Trans Am of the Firebird line followed, but the brand was shifted from its horsepower focus by the 1980s.
Then it went down
From the 1980s to the 2000s, Pontiac was no longer sold as a performance brand, and sales reflected it. As of 2008, fewer than 275,000 were selling annually. The demise of Pontiac marks an unfortunate end to a previous legend.
