Budget Decorating: Cabinet Refacing
Getting new cabinets can be really expensive, so all homeowners dread the time that they need new cabinets. Whether your goal is to give the kitchen a fresh, new look or you've simply worn out your old cabinets, the job can be done manually for a fraction of what it would cost a professional to replace and install the boxes. If you want to learn to use veneers and reface your cabinet doors follow the steps in this article and you'll potentially save thousands of dollars.
Avoid taking shortcuts
People seem to take shortcuts when the work on a project. With this project, attempting to complete the work without removing the cabinet doors isn't such a good idea. The cabinet doors and all the hardware, including the hinges and screws, should be removed. Not only will this help you prevent the scratching of other surfaces, you'll also prevent scratching yourself.
How to begin
Begin by sanding the doors now that they have been removed. Installing veneers that will look beautiful and last for years will be simple as long as you first sand the sides of the doors and the face frame down to the wood. This ensures a good sealing surface ultimately ensuring that the veneers adhere properly. Starting off means that you should use a coarse sand paper, then you should move on to a finer sand paper in order to complete the work.
Using a vacuum and tack cloth should help you in clearing away all of the debris and wood dust from surfaces. The only way to get a smooth and professional look with the veneers is by clearing all the sawdust so that they can properly adhere.
Preparing veneers
This is the part where patience definitely pays off. Take your time and don't rush when you measure and cut veneers for the sides and face of the cabinets. Take measurements for the face frame and sides, then measure again before cutting so that you can cut exactly the amount of veneer you need. Doing it right the first time and avoiding inaccurate cuts will help make sure that you don't waste any veneer.
Now comes the instillation of the veneer on the door. For this step you need to be sure to apply contact cement to both the wood of the cabinet door and the back of the veneer. Doing this will help you get a solid contact without air bubbles, and you'll have a finished product that just looks smooth and professional. Once you make sure that you've placed and aligned the veneer you should use a roller to press down all the surfaces for a thorough adhesion.
Final Steps
Inspect your work as soon as you have applied the veneer to the cabinet doors. If you take notice to any crack, glue drips or veneers that aren't aligned you should fix the problem now. Correcting a mistake now is much easier than figuring it out later when the glue has set and hardened.
The time has finally come, you're ready to re-hang the cabinet doors. Once the cabinets are nice and dry you should start hanging and replacing your hinges and hardware. Now, place the doors on their hardware. Simply wipe off any smudges or fingerprints that you leave with a a cloth, then apply some furniture polish using a soft rag to give them some protection and a soft sheen.
As you've come to see, some effort needs to be put into this project, but the savings more than pay for themselves in the end. With just a little elbow grease, anyone can give their cabinets a great new look.
