The Ultimate Guide to Henley Royal Regatta
As the Regatta was instituted long before national or international rowing federations were established, it occupies a unique position in the world of rowing. Due to the event having its own rules it is not subject to those laid out by the Amateur Rowing Association. It is a very social event with many quality Henley hospitality services in operation. In fact Henley is second only to Cheltenham hospitality on the corporate entertainment calendar.
Unlike multi-lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. This involved organising up to a hundred races on a number of the 5 days. To ensure the event is completed in time, competitions begin at 5 minute intervals.
The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards, which is 112 metres longer than the standard international distance of 2,000 metres. Because the race takes around 7 minutes to complete there frequently 2 races being run at once on the river for a large proportion of the day. The volume of races taking place is cut down with each day, leaving just the Finals to be run on the final day of the event.
Races for Coxless Pairs & Double Sculls, 4 for Quad Sculls, 5 for Fours and 6 for Eights means a total of 19 events. In addition there are single sculling races for both men and women. The first women competed in a full Regatta race in 1993 when a new event was inaugurated, the Women Single Sculls. In 2000 an open event for Women’s Eights was introduced, whilst in 2001 there were new events for Women’s and Men’s Quadruple Sculls.
Henley plays host each year to crews from many countires including Germany, Estonia and Denmark. From overseas there were 98 crews last year. This years event promises to be the best yet with more diversity in the crews and the highest caliber of rower Henley has ever seen. There will be plenty of corporate events and things to see and do for all ages.
