Changing Your Own Oil Tips
Do you change the oil in Your Car? Maybe someone else does. If someone else changes your oil, make sure that they are competent. Many people have problems finding competent people to change their oil. Often times, they may forget to replace your oil cap. Are you sure that they are adding the right grade and type of oil? Lots of oil change businesses have a high personnel turnover. There may be an inexperienced person changing your oil. You can have many good reasons for changing your car's oil. Here are some tips that you may find helpful.
Comparing costs
You can take your car to the dealer for an oil change. If they do a good job, you do need to do your own oil changes. However, it may be worth it to figure out the cost. Compare the prices of oil and filters.
Your oil may be cheaper at the department store. However, your local auto parts dealer may have oil and filters on sale. They sell more, so the likelihood of a sale is better. You can save money by doing the job yourself. You may not save enough money to buy a new countertop microwave, but it can add up.
Oil
Do you know what type of oil you need? Do you know the difference between synthetic and other oils? Can you open the hood of your car? If you answered no to all three of these questions, let someone else do it. You are not ready for oil changes yet. It is better to not concern yourself with things like that.
Try getting out your Tiger rice cooker. Make a nice meal for the entire family. Not everyone can do car maintenance.
Parts
Are you still going to change your own motor oil? Make sure that you buy the right type and thickness. Check with the owner's manual to be sure. If your car calls for synthetic, make sure that you use synthetic oil. Aftermarket filters may not be good for all cars, either. With some motors, you will need a factory oil filter for maximum lubrication.
Pay attention to your oil drain plug. It should have a new gasket after every oil change. You might consider replacing the whole plug. It will not cost much. The item may be purchased at you dealer parts counter.
Summary
You may be able to change your own oil. Make sure and use the right oil and filter. Change the drain plug each time. In a year's time, you may save enough money to buy yourself a handheld vacuum or maybe a toaster.
