You're Still a Parent When Your Son Goes to College
I taught university students for more than thirty years. It is entirely possible that I may know your college age son, in some ways, better than even you do. Thousands of 18 to 22 Year Old women and men have passed through my classes and chatted in my office. Most manage to survive their encounters with me rather well, and I certainly gained plenty of insight into their lives during that sometimes difficult age range.
I know that you're child is unique. So is my son. However many people in that age group share quite a few common characteristics. They are usually quite empathetic, particularly with others in their peer group. Most have a very strong moral compass, although the specific ethical codes may vary somewhat from one individual to another. Nearly all love and value you, their parents, far more than they sometimes let you know, although they told me and their friends as they would often brag about you. However, your exalted role as the most important person in the world will eventually come to an end. Just as you did, most will eventually find a deep love interest, and many will have children of their own who will claim the positions at the top of their respective ladders. But you have important roles to play in the meantime...and even many years later.
Another attribute that all or nearly all of them have in common, especially the guys...they don't tell you everything. This has been true of every generation of college male that I've confronted in over three decades that I have been surrounded by them.
Their commitment to their own privacy should neither surprise nor offend you. You probably kept plenty of secrets from your parents as you passed through this age, however long ago that was for you. Some of the secrets are totally unimportant. They simply mark a stage in the necessary movement toward independence on the part of your son. Other secrets may be much more important. They may not share these due to a fear of your reaction or even your rejection of them if or when you learn about this part of them.
Five to ten percent of the males are holding onto a deep secret, one that often distracts them from their studies, interferes with their natural growth and that sometimes they don't even share with their closest friends. They are gay, and they have not yet found the courage to come out.
Of course, not all college age gay men cover their sexual orientation from the view of their parents.
How do I know about this? During my career in higher education, a surprising number of students have had enough confidence in my discretion to share details of their lives with me. (Don't worry, they didn't tell me anything that would make you blush.) Here are a few of the things that I have learned from those often uninvited conversations.
* The transition to college is smoother for gay students who have come out to their parents than it is for gay students who have not yet revealed their sexual orientation to mom and dad.
* Gay college students whose parents are uncritical of their son's sexual identity tend to drink much less and perform better academically that those who parents are not accepting or tolerant. Of course that is not always the case. I know of one gay student whose parents cut off all contact with him. He still managed to pull down a nearly perfect grade point average.
* Students who come out sooner to their parents adjust to both college and to their own sexual orientation better than their gay counterparts who choose to come out to parents later or those who wait until after college. The level of maturity of the students who talked to their parents is often higher even than their straight counterparts. Some of those who came out during high school (relatively small number, overall) often faced social difficulty during the high school years, but tend to exhibit the greatest maturity of all. Typically they find that the prejudices are significantly reduced in a college environment, and, in response to the greater acceptance, these students often thrive.
* The gay college students for whom the campus is the only environment in which they are out, are much more likely to overuse gay bars as a major social outlet. The freedom that they suddenly feel only in the college world can sometimes become overwhelming, and they focus too much on their newfound liberty and far too little on their studies or extra-curricular activities.
* Gay young men who have come out to their parents tend to maintain a much closer relationship with their parents that do those who are still hiding a very important and personal part of their self-definition from those parents . In many cases this is true even in those situation in which the news was not greeted warmly by one or both of the parents. It seems that the secret is more damaging to parent-child relationships than the reactions to the revelations of those secrets.
Regarding all of these observations, I caution you against jumping to the conclusion that there is a causal relationship. For example, it is not necessarily true that coming out sooner causes greater emotional maturity during the college years. It could just as easily be true that being more mature gives young people the necessary courage to come out to their parents at a younger age.
I think what is most important to take away from my experience, especially for those of us who are parents of adult children (or children who are soon full adults) is that some secrets are better revealed, even if there is some temporary disappointment or anger. Some parents have something of a sixth sense about their sons. I think if you believe that your son is questioning his sexual orientation or is even hiding what he has already learned about himself, you should consciously leave the door open for conversation. Perhaps, leave a good, non-judgemental book about sexual orientation on the coffee table, or leave a piece of paper there with the Internet address of an educational, informational website. Remember, we don't stop being parents when our sons go off to college, the military or the workforce.
