Car Tuning Company Overfinch Goes Bust

Tuning companies specialize in tweaking everyday cars into fire breathy, neon glowing, ear drum popping beasts. From Ford to Ferrari there is a specialised tuning company out there for almost every manufacturer, they take a standard model and revamp it inside and out, changing the engine parts and interior gadgets to make a much more expensive vehicle. A few of these firms even sell on vehicles in their entirety that have been over done.

There are questions over the viability of such companies in the current financial climate however after Range Rover tuning company Overfinch went bust this week. Overfinch's most famous work was done on a Range Rover branded with the Holland and Holland logo, a respected rifle maker, the car came with two rifles in the rear as well as a champagne fridge. This model costs 140k and is verging on the ridiculous in its ostentatious grandeur, two words that aren’t top of people’s lists if they own a Audi Q7 in these austere times.

So is it game over for the tuning industry as a whole? Other companies out there like Alpina, AMG and K-tech may also be in trouble as car owners abandon after market upgrades. It is hardly surprising in a time when people are rethinking their options, considering leasing cars instead of buying them because money is so tight. In such an environment people are very unlikely to start buying diamond encrusted gear lever for their van.

Though it may not seem like a great time for tuning companies, there is an opportunity for them to diversify and find their niche in the car modification market. With the growing importance of green technology and the economical aspects of car performance, tuners could instead look to clean up cars emissions, making them cheaper to run and maintain, reducing tax and and insurance.
