The Culture On The Isle Of Wight

The Isle of Wight first began to achieve real popularity in the Victorian era. It was the ideal location on the south coast giving it a warmer temperature than the rest of the UK and Queen Victoria’s love of the Isle that saw its popularity raise. After one trip you can tell why Queen Victoria took such a liking to this place. Today this 23 mile wide island has something to offer to everyone. Its location means it enjoys a slightly milder climate than the majority of the UK sees. The fact that the majority is a dedicated area of outstanding natural beauty guarantees you a scenic holiday or day trip.

The easiest way to get over to the island is by one of the many ferry crossings. Whether you’re visiting the island by foot or with Your Car catching one of the hundreds of ferries that go everyday is as easy as catching a bus. Once you’re there there’s plenty for you to see and do on the Isle of Wight.

Queen Victoria loved this island so much she and her husband Prince Albert built Osborne house here. Queen Victoria eventually died at Osborne house after raising her family there. Today is it open to the public to enjoy. Prince Albert designed the house in the theme of the Italian Renaissance after claiming the views reminded him of the Bay of Naples. Both Victoria and Albert loved art and as a result they often commissioned splendid paintings and other works of art as gifts. Osborne House has a lot of these works of art on display today.

Carisbrook Castle is one of the biggest tourist attractions on the IOW. Until just over sixty years ago this castle was still a residence of the royal family. Queen Victoria’s youngest child The Princess Beatrice resided there as the Governor of the Isle of Wight. Historians believe this castle dates back to before the Roman invasion. Its history has always seen in under the control of the British monarchy in one form or another before being given over to the English Heritage.
