What Does "The Best" Mean?
A customer approached me the other day in the tequila aisle and asked a very engaging question... "Is Patron the best tequila on the market?"
While Patron is a brilliant top-shelf tequila, it is more a pop culture phenomenon and not necessarily "the best" tequila available. Much of the liquor industry is focused around image and sales. Many of the products that society and salesmen stipulate to be "the best" are usually glorious products, but I'd probably never call them "the best."
Grey Goose and Patron are both great products, just as their advertising campaigns dictate. However, my advice is that you don't let yourself be sold to. A determination of "the best" can only really be decided on by the buyer. Drink what you like, not what people deem that you must like.
Some of my favourite products in the entire store are from the tiniest producers. I suspect that smaller producers offer more bang for your buck. All that promoting costs companies millions of dollars, so it's only logical that those expensive advertising campaigns and popular culture references will be mirrored in the cost of the product.
One example is Pierre Ferrand cognac. For virtually the same price as Hennessy V.S, it's possible to get Pierre Ferrand's Amber cognac, which is an X.O. From the Grande Champagne area (the best territory within cognac). The Hennessy is a good V.S. Cognac, but you are paying a lot to have the privilege of drinking that name brand. The Ferrand on the other hand is an X.O. And just on a complete other level.
So the message of this essay is to drink what you like, not what society tells you to like. But remember that there isn't anything wrong with purchasing a name, it's typically a safe bet. You can always be assured that you are getting a quality product. That is among the many benefits to branding, but remember that by traveling off the well trodden route you can always get a product of equal or better quality for a bit less.
