PLANT HIRE – MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR
When there’s a need for a piece of heavy machinery for a specific job – a practical option is equipment hire. And although equipment hire should be the most cost-effective and practical option, making the wrong choice of supplier can have the opposite effect.
Before making a commitment, check that the hire contractor offers the following benefits to you::
· Save costs
· Saving time
· Convenience and quality
· Flexible
· Quick turnaround of maintenance and repairs
· How easy is the equipment to operate?
· Has the hire contractor recommended the right piece of equipment for the job
Are you looking for ‘wet’ or ‘dry’ hire of machinery – ie do you require an operator for the piece of equipment or do you have your own operator?.
With equipment rental, you can get all the advantages of ownership without the hassle. There’s no major capital expense – but there is the option of long-term hiring, there are no storage costs, maintenance and repairs are outsourced and you have access to a greater variety of equipment than would be possible with ownership. By hiring equipment, it’s possible to link costs to activity levels – resulting in improved productivities and efficiencies. However, to avoid making costly mistakes when it comes to choosing the equipment rental contractor – you may want to ask the following questions:
· What is the track record of the company? It’s useful to get a reference or testimonial from customers that have had similar requirements to your own.
· How many years has the company been in operation?
· What is your service, maintenance and repair policy and are these costs covered in the hire rate?
· Is service / repair available 24/7 – and how soon could you provide a replacement vehicle in case of a breakdown?
· What’s your insurance policy?
· Are your hiring conditions flexible – and would there be penalties for breaking the contract? You may get a better rate with a long-term contract, but understand your obligations.
· Are you able to provide a skilled operator for the equipment? Note – licencing requirements may vary from state to state.
· If I’m ‘dry’ hiring the machinery, do you provide training for the operator?
· Do the costs differ between equipment manufacturers eg mining machine hire from Bell vs mining machine hire from Komatsu?
· Also check their certificates of safety compliance.
Understand your own requirements from any equipment or machinery that you’ll be hiring. Although a reputable contractor will be able to make recommendations as to what equipment is suitable for a particular job – it’s always best to start discussions from a position of strength, so know your own requirements upfront, Doing the homework upfront and taking a bit of time over your choice of equipment rental contractor will pay dividends over the long-term.
