Mars500 Mission To A Simulated Mars Enters Orbit
Don't worry, it's only a simulation, but Man has arrived in orbit around Mars.. The Mars500 mission simulation, which sees Six cosmonauts locked in a cramped facility for 520 days, is now in 'orbit' having completed a 250 day trip. In reality, the simulator hasn't left the Moscow warehouse in which it is based. And when the Cosmonauts move to their landing craft to the 'surface of Mars', they'll only be walking less than 100 meters to get there in reality.
The full round trip of 520 days duration sees the cosmonauts (all men) taking 30 days to explore the Martian surface before a 240 day return trip. Hardly comparable to taking Holidays to Barbados then. The mission started in June 2010 and the men are not scheduled to exit the capsule until November. The technical aspects of a mission to Mars have been speculated upon and widely researched for as long as space flight has been possible. Mars500 is therefore an effort to simulate the often overlooked human element in any potential mission. To simulate the likely scale of any Mars-bound craft, there is only about 550 cubic metres in the main 'rocket' of the experiment. Because sending food into space is costly and inefficient, the mission also simulates the special dietary needs of the participants of a five hundred day mission.
Weightlessness has not been simulated in the experience, though the effects of a prolonged lack of gravity on the human body are not fully understood. There's also the knowledge that the science team running the experiment are a few hundred metres away, ready to save you if something genuinely does go wrong. It's hardly the case that a crew member can suddenly leave for Weddings abroad, but this literal grounding of the mission will naturally have to be factored into any later conclusions. Still, elements of genuine procedure are put into the experiment. Communications are delayed depending on the ships distance and the walks on Mars' surface are conducted in spacesuits. Technical disasters form a part of the experiment, to explore the reactions of the six person crew. The crew passed with flying colours when the cabin was filled with smoke and the module power was cut. Though they're just under half way through, the experiment has so far been as clear as a Tropical Sky.
