Is Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder Inheritable/Preventable?
I come from a family with some severe mental problems. My mother was schizophrenic, and my older brother was labeled with oppostitional defiant disorder and conduct disorder as a child. As an adult, he kills animals and the family keeps their distance because he seems like a firecracker ready to explode.
To the best of my knowledge, I've turned out pretty normal. My fiance is very "normal" too (no mental probs). I worry, however, for my future kids.
Are tthese things "genetic", or would a good environment with two stable parents prevent these things?
I think that a lot of people's mental problems are from their environment. However, if you had the same parents, both of you should have mental problems, so...
You can never prevent any problem completely, but I think you are on the right track. However, don't be overly conscious of it, or you will end up obsessing over it, and that won't help your kids.
