Understanding How Halogen Light Bulbs Work
During 1958, a special type of incandescent lamp was launched in the market. They named it halogen light bulb. It is capable of burning longer and brighter as compared to ordinary light bulbs, undertaking it the preferable option in instances when especially vibrant lamps are needed. Because halogen light bulbs burn with more intensity and last longer, they prove to be much more efficient as compared to typical incandescent lamps.
Halogen-containing light bulbs and incandescent lamps have quite the same styles, considering that the former were a variation of the latter. Similar to the typical incandescent bulb, a halogen bulb has a tungsten filament that is encased in a bulb. However for the latter, the bulb uses quartz rather than glass. Quartz endures much higher temperatures than glass. Hence, the quartz light bulb can be made near the filament, thus enabling this kind of bulbs to be small compared to regular light bulbs.
As suggested by its name, halogen lamps have a halogen gas in the bulb encasement. Electric lamps need an inert or nonreactive gas inside the bulb to avoid reaction with the very hot tungsten. Incandescent lamps have nitrogen or argon, however the new version has a halogen gas instead. Usually the halogen gas is actually iodine.
Most electric bulbs work by allowing electric energy to move in the tungsten filament. Since this filament is an extremely thin wire, it carries increased resistance which is transformed into heat the moment current crosses. This heat increases until such time the wire glows white hot. Voila! You have a functioning lamp. However, as the heat triggers the filament to glow, it is also this particular heat which contributes to its continuous deterioration. Since tungsten is heated up to very high heat, it evaporates. Tungsten particles end up deposited on inner surfaces of the bulb in ordinary bulbs. However in modern lights with halogen gas, the halogen reacts with tungsten atoms to restrain deposition and avoid darkening of lamps. Tungsten particles are consequently accumulated again on the filament making it survive longer.
As said before, any halogen bulb can burn brighter as compared to an incandescent bulb. Also, since they glow better, they glow a lot warmer too. The quartz encasing is also a lot warmer because of its closeness to the shining filament. This heat might be more than enough to ignite a flammable product close by. So, for precautionary measure, halogen based bulbs should be positioned away from flammable and combustible materials. Careful storing of the bulbs should be observed to prevent accidents and burns.
Authorities don't recommend holding halogen bulbs with uncovered hands mainly because this could ruin the quartz surface area with salts and oils from your skin. The exposed quartz surface turns into a weak spot to cut back the lifespan of the light bulbs. Hence, the light bulbs must only be handled, soon after being cooled off in the socket, with gloved hands. If perhaps unintentional skin contact has been done, the bulb should be wiped carefully.
