Riches Found When Cleaning Out The House
Sitting at the kitchen table over a cup of coffee, the three of us made plans. The funeral had been this afternoon and everyone had left except us. We had decisions to make about the house and all the possessions of moms that were in it. It was all up to us three girls.
Having split up what had to be done during the week, we agreed to meet back on Saturday to start on the house. Mom had collected a lot of things over the years. Just thinking about it was enough to make you want to go home and torch your own house and start over.
Saturday arrived and we each took a room. Boxes in hand, garbage bags and cleaning supplies I started in the bathroom. What was I thinking!?!? Oh well, on the counter by the sink was some jewelry that I had to sort through. Oh look at this pretty crystal necklace. I had seen mom wear it many times, it was one of her favorites. Putting it aside with the fond memories, I moved on.
About then my sister Jessica waltzed in with a couple of hobo bags hanging from her shoulder. She asked if I was interested in having either of them. No I had no interest in those bags. Grinning she said these were for her. Having found her gem for the day she went back to work as I finished up the bathroom.
Moving into the kitchen I separated the food into three boxes for we girls to take home with us. Items that none of us wanted were going to be sent to the church mom had been going to that had a thrift store. I set the small appliances on the counter to be gone through. Dishes were boxed up for the church as we sisters did not want those. The pans were going with me so I took the time to throw them in my car. I was looking forward to having a good set of pans; mom always did have the best and I was looking forward to using these.
With a brown boot in tow, Jessica came out of the other room asking us if we had seen the one to match. Neither of us had, so she asked us to keep our eyes peeled for it. We were only about half way through the day, and had a lot more to go through, so there was a possibility the mate would still be found.
Having finished a lot, we were tired at the end of the day. Something to remind us of mom was going home with each one of us. Agreeing to meet again later in the week, we realized that we were beginning to bond on this new journey in our life. Working together we would make it through this trial.
