My Little Pony Toys - Every Little Girl's Dreams
In 2008 My Little Pony toys celebrated 25 years of wonderful whimsicality, playfulness and near celebrity status. Invented and manufactured by Hasbro My Little Pony toys have brought fun and friendship to millions of little girls all over the world for years, and they continue to bring enjoyment today to adults as well as children.
These rainbow coloured little ponies have a long and interesting story to tell but their indelable characterisitics remain, they are as wonderful and whimsical as Hasbro intended when they were created.
Most little girls would love to own a pony and My Little Pony toys are a substtiute for the real thing. Especially for little girls born in the 1970’s, growing up in the 80’s, as My Little Pony toys inspired pretty much a whole generation. The same little girls that were around during the first generation of ponies are now grown ups who still love My Little Pony toys just as much and they have become very collectable.
Of course My Little Pony toys remained hugely popular after the first little girls to play with them grew up but their designs, shapes and colours changed and other toy manufacturers made similar products to compete with them. Before any such competition, when they were first introduced in 1983, My Little Pony toys became so popular that they outsold the infamous and massively successful Barbie doll at one point.
The creation of My Little Pony toys closely followed My Pretty Pony toys, their American relation that had been released to the market in 1981. My Pretty Pony was produced by Romper Room under the licence of Hasbro, although Hasbro later obtained the patent. My Pretty Pony was bigger than My Little Pony and her colour was more earthy in tone than the pastel colours of My Little Pony that followed.
There were initially only only six little ponies and the first generation of ponies was between 1983 to 1995 (1992 in the US). These original six ponies were all Earth ponies, that is they had no wings or horns, unlike later little ponies. They had soft, brushable tails and manes as well as their own symbols on their behinds. Every little pony was sold with a ribbon and a comb for grooming it.
One of the first ponies released came with the Grooming Parlour (Pretty Parlour in the US), released in 1983. The Grooming Parlour was a blue plastic rectangular carry-case that opened out into a parlour to groom your little pony. It came with ribbons, a comb, hats, a saddle and a bridle, as well as nametags to show a pony's name on the stage in the centre. It also came with a tabby cat and a pink basket that could be strapped to the pony’s back.
My Little Pony toys changed thier appearance slightly over time but they retained their pastel colours and individual symbols on their sides. After the original Earth Ponies there were Unicorns, Pegasus ponies and baby ponies were made in all three varieties - Earth, Unicorn and Pegasus. The earliest babies were like their mothers but not as big and made in different, slightly softer colourings. Later babies were given more distinctive identities of their own.
In 1997 the My Little Pony brand was re-launched by Hasbro (1999 in the US and globally in 2003) and made a massive come-back, although for some people it had never really gone away and remained an icon of their childhoods. The second genereation ponies were made in completely different poses. They were a different shape to the original first generation ponies, slimmer and smaller in height, with longer legs and turning heads. Most of them were Earth ponies but there were a few unicorns, although no Pegasus ponies and only two baby ponies.
All the Generation 2 My Little Pony toys were discontinued in 2003 when the next, and current, generation of little ponies was introduced. The third generation of ponies includes the re-release of some of the original generation ponies, but standing in different poses and with shiny bodies instead of matte, and matte symbols on their flanks.
Between 2003 and 2005 only Earth ponies were released, in 2005 Pegasus ponies were released and in 2006 Unicorn ponies were released. In 2008 Hasbro reduced its My Little Pony toys down to just seven ponies and from now no new ponies will be created, although some older generation models may be released.
Whatever happens in the future of My Little Pony toys, they will always retain their charm and appeal to millions of little girls and adults worldwide and they are sure to have a long, magical life ahead. Their playful, magical nature and iconic status will hopefully stand the test of time and remain for generations of little girls to come yet.
