The Toyota Land Cruiser: An Off Road Legend
The mighty Toyota Land Cruiser owns an enviable reputation as a highly capable 4WD vehicle. First introduced to Australia in in the year if 1958, when Leslie Theiss (now Sir Leslie Theiss) brought in thirteen FJ 25 Landcruisers to be utilised on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Sir Les had been impressed by some privately owned Land Cruisers that were already working in the region. With a clever mix of a strong, reliable engine and rugged transmission system, the Land Cruiser performed well in the harsh environment and was also quite suitable on the open roads, making it a very versatile vehicle.
Not long after the Landcruisers arrived, Toyota sent engineers from Japan to study and rectify issues that these early Land Cruisers were experiencing in Australia. Failed parts were inspected and sent back to Japan in what was a strategic part of the R&D program Toyota conducted to enhance the Landcruiser in to a market leading player. Not only did it allow Toyota to develop its reputation, this level of support was enough for Sir Leslie Theiss to secure the rights to import the Landcruiser in to the country full time.
The Toyota Land Cruiser became used extensively by resource companies and in the more rugged regions and today they are very common in the outback. In the Northern Territory alone, they almost account for 60% of the total SUV sales up there. The Landcruisers impressive off road capabilities, huge towing capacity and legendary Toyota reliability contribute to making it a market leader in Australia. Although the Landcruiser only accounts for quite a small portion of total Toyota sales, it has the most loyal followers of all Toyota models, highlighted by the number of repeat purchases Landcruiser owners make.
The success of the Landcruiser in Australia is certainly a part of Toyota’s proud history.. When the Landcruiser was first introduced here, the company was still somewhat in its infancy and the response to the vehicle by the public generated some of Toyotas strongest export sales at that time. It also established Toyota’s footing in this country by forming an incredible reputation in a very short period of time. These day's Australia continues to play a strategic role in the development of the Landcruiser, as the tough landscape makes it an ideal testing ground. 1000's of kilometres are driven over harsh terrain and in hotconditions, generating valuable research information ensuring each new Toyota Land Cruiser model will maintain the reputation of its name.
As new car sales of the formidable Toyota Land Cruiser continue to decrease, as the attraction of smaller 4WD's with better fuel economy rises, it will always remain in the hearts of many Australians. Stay in touch with the activity at http://www.usedtoyotalandcruisers.com.au, as the tale is far from over, with used toyota activity remaining strong, with older models purchased for restoring and weekend four wheel drivers and caravan and boat owners, maintaining an interest in the diversity of models of Land Cruiser still on the market.
