Eliminate Jumping Through Border Collie Training
More often, when people hear training, particularly border collie training, what comes into mind is a medium-sized dog learning how to execute tricks like roll over, high five, play dead and others. Nevertheless, training a dog is not just teaching to obey commands for the benefit of entertainment. Dog training pertains to having a well-behaved dog who reliably obeys commands at all times especially when peril is at hand.
There are lots of dog behavior problems that could be curtailed through dog training – one is jumping. Though jumping can be viewed as your dog's way of showing his excitement for seeing you or for having you around, it ought to be eradicated entirely for it may possibly result to further problems like injury and distressing experience particularly to children.
In order to stop this typical behavior, here are a few steps you may want to take:
- Train him to reliably obey commands such as sit or stay. Before your active border collie jump, give the command sit or stay and reward him after a few seconds of sitting or staying. If he moves and tries to jump, turn and step away from him. This should lead him to realize that he gets rewards for sitting or staying but jumping will earn him no attention.

- To discourage jumping, stand still, fold your arms and avoid speaking, giving vocal instructions nor making eye-to-eye contact.
The rule of thumb to get your dog to stop jumping is to get him to know that he gets good things for exhibiting good behavior like sitting but gets nothing for jumping. And make sure to stay consistent with your border collie training approach in order to get your desired result.
