Civil War Aficionado's Must Visit Gordonsville
History really comes alive when you are at scenic Gordonsville, VA. The locals cherish their town’s historic roots and the various museums in this place testify to this fact. If you are a history fan that has a special liking for almost all things to do with the civil war, then Gordonsville needs to be your next vacation destination.
The History of Gordonsville
Gordonsville got its name from Nathaniel Gordon who bought property here to set up a bar alongside his home. This tavern was recognized for its chicken dinners and very soon it was a frequent stage coach stop. This town’s strategic position on the primary railroads of that era made it all the more popular as tired train passengers regularly stopped in town to refresh themselves. The Exchange Hotel was a preferred luxury accommodation for the more wealthy visitors. The hotel is today a Civil War Museum.
The Chicken Leg Centre of the Universe
This was the unusual name given to Gordonsville in the 1870’s. The main reason for this name would be that the ladies of this small town sold coffee, chicken and other food items to the people on the trains that passed through. They would frequently simply pass the items to the hungry passenger through the coach’s open window and the passenger could buy delectable food without even getting off the train. Even when dining cars came to be used very commonly, Gordonsville continued to uphold its well earned good name for great tasting dressed chicken.
A Civil War Hub
Through the Civil War, Gordonsville was an important hub since essential supply lines both by road and rail passed through here. Even with many efforts by the Federals to capture the town, it stayed within Confederate control until the very end. The Cameron’s Mountain or Bell’s Mountain is the place where the Federals came closest to the town. In 1862, the Exchange Hotel was converted to a hospital where wounded soldiers could be taken care of. They were transported here by train. One interesting fact is that this hospital, known as the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, cared for both Confederate and Federal soldiers.
