The Amazing Advances In Automobile Technology—Down-Sizing Of Engines.
The Remarkable Development of Downsizing of Engines in Automotive Technology.
{Overview:}
With engine sizes being reduced the surprising advance in technology is the accompanying increase in power developed and increased efficiency. This will put engines under the spotlight and how they are being down-sized without losing power.
In the 90's the general inpression was that any advances in motorcar technology would only be incremental as the motor car had reached the limit of its evolution Ever stricter legislation on the quality of exhaust gases, the worry about scarcer oil reserves and suchlike motivations have been the forces that drove the advance of motor car technology to new heights.
Two possibilities exist on how to retain the power or even increasing it while downsizing an engine.
* Let it operate at higher revolutions. With higher revs and better breathing, racing engines developed more power than normal production engines. There are limits to this as an engine becomes rough running and no longer usable on the street if too much performance is demanded from it.
* Force in more air by means of a supercharger, which has the same outcome as if the engine size is increased. Turbo-charging is used mostly today.
{How it is being done:}
{Turbo-charging and Supercharging}
Pumping extra air into an engine than it can suck in by itself, is the fastest enhancer of power there is.
a) Supercharging or b) turbo-charging are two ways in which this can be done.
a) Supercharging is the driving of an air pump (there are several types) by the engine itself that forces additional air into the inlet tract. It is similar to increasing the size of an engine, which is in itself one of the easiest ways of attaining more power.
A less efficient method to increase power is to make an engine bigger and this was done in former years by American manufacturers. A part of the additional power to drive the supercharger is drawn from the engine itself.
Mercedes standardized on a single engine size on many models of its C-range simply by varying the supercharger speeds to give different outputs, but these days they seem to have gone for turbo-charging. With a properly designed turbo-charging system the same effect can be obtained from a single engine size.
b) Exhaust gases leaving a cylinder of an engine still contain energy that can be tapped by letting it drive a turbine. The free energy still in the exhaust gases causes this turbine to drive an inlet turbine located on the same shaft but isolated from it, pumping in air under pressure into the engine and increasing its power output.
On the latest turbo-charged engines the torque (pulling power) curve is as flat as a table from a mere 1500rpm up to 5000rpm, which is simply astonishing. Engines of only 2/3 the size develop the same and even much more power than the engines of only 10 years ago. High torque (pulling power) at low revs used to be the character of larger engines of bygone years but these turbo-charged engines have those same attributes but deliver much higher mileage.
This is efficiency! The petrol consumption has been reduced similarly. Without these advanced electronic controls this would have been unthinkable.
This is probably one of the main reasons why cars have become so much more efficient. This technology has been pioneered by European manufacturers although the rest of the world is not far behind. Having been around for countless years, turbo-charging on engines can however only really by fully exploited with modern electronic controls. Chevrolet used turbo-charging on some of their Corvair models as far back as the 1960's
Engine technology only became much more advanced when modern electronic introduced hugely accurate and fast controls of the whole combustion process and other functions.
The transmission of the engine power to the wheels of a motorcar and its effect on the economy of operation, will be handled in a coming article in the series.
