Caution - Motor Fans
If you're anything at all like me, a scratch here and there on your vehicle really isn't too much to stress about. The bumper ding (clearly somebody else's fault) is nothing to lose sleep over. However if you're over the age of 25 or anything like my Pa, a scratch of any size, in any location, is considered a grave matter which must always be attended to immediately. Not too far back I was unfortunate enough to learn all about the wonders of crash repairs and auto restoration services, when one of my Dad's beloved vintage cars landed in the repair shop.
After settling down and retiring, Pop had pulled out all the stops to become a vehicle restorer. From 20's buggies to a '67 Mustang, a massive range of classic cars became the pinnacle of his existence. It was on a clear, crisp Sunday morning, the ideal day for driving in the country side. The one bad thing about Sundays is, of course, Sunday drivers. We'd gotten out of the garage and one or two streets from home when Dad's Chevrolet Bel-Air was T-boned by a befuddled senior citizen.
Still in pain from whiplash in the passenger's seat, my heart was warmed as I watched my father flip through the directories to call a tow truck instead of seeing if I was ok. My neck still twinging, I thoroughly enjoyed an awkwardly silent ride jammed between my seething father and a sweaty tow truck driver. To further my delight, we spent a full 40 minutes driving round the nearest town until Dad picked a mechanical restoration shop which was "fully authorized in handling such an invaluable machine".
After weeks of work involving untiring vehicle restoration manufacturers, metal crafters and a long line of engineers and panel beaters, my Pa was a long way from satisfied. His chevy had scratch repair, 1 or 2 painting services, body restoration, wheel repairs, trim restoration and a final all over detailing (not that a professional detailer came anywhere near Dad's standards).
That unfortunate event did not stop my Dad fixing up cars or taking them out, it was merely a speed hump on his path to auto heaven. When I think about Dad's (often creepy) love of automobiles and untiring dedication to perfection, I ponder how I - an individual who wouldn't consider vehicle painting or scratch repair unless I won the lotto -could possibly share genes with him.
