Does AOL Radio Mean The End Of FM Stations?

AOL Radio, Pandora, Slacker and Last.fm are a few of the online radio services that have become popular these last few years. Several of these are also available on mobile products including cell phones. Does this indicate the end of traditional radio stations? I will take a look at the impact of streaming radio on the radio landscape.

Local radio stations do seem to have a hard time these days. Satellite radio has been cutting the market share of conventional radio stations severely in the past couple of years by offering mobility, a substantial number of commercial-free music channels and news and entertainment channels. The internet has allowed access to a nearly unlimited number of online radio stations.

Pandora in addition to other online radio services have become available on wireless audio transmitter and portable products by installing the appropriate app. This increases convenience and mobility of online radio. Mobility has up to now been the largest advantage of local radio.

AOL Radio provides in excess of 200 music channels in addition to 150 national CBS radio stations since it utilizes CBS radio as its platform. The underlying platform “play.it” also has a feature that allows listeners to make their own radio stations by entering favored albums, artists and so on. The individual tracks of each music channel are also accessible for storage on an iPod through 3rd-party software such as iGetMusic.

Users can also create customized radio on other online music services by entering the artist and album names and these providers will play songs based on that information. However, most online radio broadcasters lack the ability to create fully customized radio stations such as the “play.it” platform.

Is the extinction of local radio close? The rise of competition from satellite and online radio has started to take away listeners from local radio stations. Conventional radio appears to have a difficult time to halt this trend. Particularly niche broadcasters have found online radio very useful. The main cause is the low broadcasting cost of online radio compared with terrestrial radio. One more reason is the difficulty acquiring frequency space licenses from the FCC. On the other hand, increasing royalty charges have made the life of online broadcasters more difficult lately.

The large number of available stations is a big plus for online radio listeners. However, this is a problem for online broadcasters. This large number of stations is diluting the number of listeners. As a result streaming radio broadcasters have found it difficult to be profitable. At the same time, however, there is less pressure to insert commercials due to the lower expenses of broadcasting in comparison with traditional stations. This has made online radio content more appealing than terrestrial radio.

Local programming such as news and local events, nonetheless, will remain one of the big advantages of local radio. Moreover, local radio is now improving the audio quality by using digital transmission technologies versus conventional FM broadcasts which has been a big plus of online radio to date. The big factors that will ultimately decide the fate of each technology are content and convenience. Online radio and traditional radio each have their own niche regarding providing unique content and both offer high mobility and convenience so there will most likely be no clear winner.
