Car-sharing Consolidation: ZipCar Acquires Streetcar
In a few large U.S. cities, seeing a parking lot full of ZipCars is becoming more and more common. Drivers in the United Kingdom will now be signing up for ZipCar memberships if they want to share a car too. ZipCar, the Cambridge-based organization, has purchased the U.K. company Streetcar. Once combined, the ZipCar / Streetcar network will have 1,770 vehicles in the U.K.
ZipCar makes global investments
ZipCar did set up a branch of its car-sharing network in London in 2006. Despite the London opening, ZipCar has focused expansion efforts on North America, including merging with competitor Flexcar. In December of 2009, however, ZipCar purchased a minority stake in Barcelona, Spain based Avancar. The recent announcement of the purchase of Streetcar cements the fact that ZipCar is trying to create a "global" car-sharing network.
ZipCar testing plug-in electrics
By acquiring Streetcar, ZipCar will also acquire the Streetcar test of plug-in hybrids as a part of the fleet. About two years ago, Streetcar began testing plug-in hybrid vehicles. In July 2009, ZipCar launched two all-electric "EV Pod" cars as a part of their fleet. With 15 percent of their vehicles already hybrids, ZipCar is planning on expanding their hybrid fleet.
Initial Public Offering of ZipCar?
ZipCar is a 10-year-old company, and will be posting its first quarter of profitability this year. ZipCar has made some very loud noises about possibly initiating an IPO and turning itself into a publicly-owned company by the end of this year. ZipCars CEO originally said that an IPO was not in the cards, but he now reports that an IPO would allow the company to expand while getting investors some of their money back.
How the ZipCar business model works
The business model that ZipCar and other car-sharing services uses is fairly simple. A membership with the vehicle sharing company allows members to rent cars by the day or hour. In the United States, a membership fee is $ 50. Car-sharing clubs are very effective in densely populated areas, where individuals need a car only occasionally. Membership fees and rental fees pay for the fuel, maintenance, and insurance of the vehicle. ZipCar is not the only car-sharing service - nonprofit organizations as well as traditional car-rental companies are building car-sharing networks as well.
