What Are The New Trends In Elder Care?
An estimated 78 million people -- or 28% of the population -- comprise the Baby Boomer Generation, a cohort that will soon be approaching old age. These independent boomers are looking for ways to avoid "being put in a home" so they can live as independently as possible for as long as they can. In the meantime, their cash-strapped kids aren't thinking about it yet, but in another 20 years will likely be wondering how they'll ever afford senior services. Luckily, entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations are looking into products and services centered around elder care help.
The for-profit social worker is one type of elder care help that is already on the rise. Typically costing $80 to $200 per hour, these people provide rides to doctor's appointments, supervise medication, monitor other senior health professionals that come to the home, provide crisis intervention, offer financial instruction and research other care options. "Geriatric-care managers have their fingers on the pulse of services available locally," explains Elinor Ginzler, senior VP of livable communities for AARP. While these services are not covered by health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, a professional Geriatric Care Manager (GCM) can be very helpful, especially for primary caregivers who live far away. For more information, visit www.caremanager.org.
"Senior sitters" is a form of elder care help offered by nurses during their off-duty time. This type of elderly caregiver is comfortable assisting with bathing, grooming, hair washing, nail care, oral hygiene, clothes selection and purchasing bath products. They are also trained to treat skin rashes, bed sores and incontinence problems for the bed-ridden. Assistants ensure seniors get to the bathroom safely and that they get a customized exercise program to improve mobility. Home health care nurses can develop customized dietary plans, prepare nutritious meals and monitor weight. Patients will never miss their scheduled doses of medication or worry about loneliness when their new Friends Play board games, read to them or dine with them. They will get transportation to and from the doctor, the hospital, the barber shop or out to a fun activity. For more information, visit www.seniorsittersusa.com.
Senior fitness programs offer a unique sort of elder care help that the middle-aged can take advantage of right now. Beyond the nursing home or the hospital, jobs are opening in health promotion, holistic healing, alternative medicine, health insurance and fitness. Countless studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of exercise in reducing the risk of heart disease, cancer, depression, anxiety, obesity, arthritis, dementia and many other physical ailments. The American College of Sports Medicine reported "Senior Fitness" as the #6 of their Top 10 Fitness Trends. Most local YMCA and gym facilities offer some sort of senior programming for as low as $30/month. "We want to be able to provide health and fitness not just to the middle-aged adult class, but from the very young to the Very Old," explains Steve Simon, executive director of the Regional Family YMCA in East Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. "With our Silver Sneakers program, we bring in a lot of senior citizens."
