Opium - An Old Addiction
Opium has a long history of use. Dating back to the ancient Sumerians this derivative of the poppy seed has effected almost every nation; ancient to present day. Today it is a main ingredient found in many opiates and has lead to opiate addiction for many individuals. Because of its habit forming nature those addicted to opium or any opiate should seek opiate medical detox at a medical detox center.
The Plant Of Joy
Opium is formed from the dried liquid scraped from the unripened Papaver somniferum seed, or opium seed. By collecting and drying this exudate, opium is created. Poppy seed plants have been harvested for centuries, from ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt. It was widely believed to cure many physical ailments as well as emotional pain.
Ancient Medicines
In ancient Greece physicians widely prescribed opium; they would grind the whole poppy seed plant or use some of the tincture as a cure for certain ailments. These ailments included venomous bites, chronic headaches, vertigo, spitting of blood, tightness of breath, colic, urinary tract problems, fevers, melancholy, and the list continues. It was also used to cure those afflicted with womanly ailments, an ancient ancestor to Midol apparently.
Emotional Cures
It is known now that opium did not aide all those particular ailments; however, it was popularly used and known for its powers to cure not only physical, but emotional pain. Even today poppy seed teas are made at funerals to ease the grief of mourners. Throughout history it has been known as, The Plant of Joy, Sacred Anchor of Life, Milk of Paradise, The Hand of God, and Destroyer of Grief. It was widely believed cross-culturally that opium was given to humans by the god(s) to relieve mans suffering.
History
Although opium is wonderful at relieving pain of the physical and emotional kind, there is a downside. It is highly addictive. Nations around the world such as China, Britain, and the Middle East have been riddled with opiate addiction. It is a very habit forming narcotic that creates a much desired hallucinogenic high. The high induced is a gentle, dream-like state that takes the user away from any pain they’re trying to escape. Breaking the habit usually requires a opiate medical detoxification center.
Opium Wars
Opium has long been a disputed drug, wars ensued, and soon opium was being smuggled in and out of various countries. Still in some cultures opium was and is widely used. Opium smoking was infused within the Chinese culture, so when thousands of Chinese immigrated to the United States to help build railroads in the 1800’s, the use of Opium ran rampant. It was refereed to as the ‘hydra-headed monster’ and blamed for wrecking American culture. Later, in 1874 a pharmacist by the name of C.R. Alder Wright attempted to make a non-addictive alterative to opium. Thus lead to the creation of heroin.
People today still become addicted to opiates and it is important for those who are addicted to seek opiate addiction detoxification at a detox center to prevent it from ruining their lives.
